Our beloved Kyah was recently diagnosed with Mast cell tumor. Our hearts are broken knowing that she will have to battle through this disease at such a young age...only 7 years old :-( Mast cell tumors are a type of skin cancer that occurs in dogs. Normal mast cells regulate a dog's inflammatory and immune responses. Kyah has a significant tumor burden, in that she has a large swelling remaining over her left shoulder. Her tumor remains ill-defined and extensive. By the time we had discovered the cancerous growth, the tumor was already in its second stage. Through a combination of treatments, the goal is to shrink the tumor so that surgical removal of the mass is possible. Based on the veterinary oncologist's recommendation, Kyah's treatment plan is as follows: Daily pills - Prilosec, Benadryl (anti-inflammatory), Prednisolone (steroids) and weekly chemotherapy. Kyah will continue chemotherapy in an attempt to shrink the tumor as much as possible, which may make definitive therapies more feasible in the future. Kyah remains happy despite her mast cell disease. We know that we need to remain positive and keep Kyah happy and comfortable as possible.
